CACTACEAE A. L. JUSS.

PROTEIN AND WATER CONTENT OF THE FASCIATED AND NORMAL STEMS OF CACTACEAE: COMPARATIVE STUDY

Plants for the research have been taken from a collection of succulent plants of the Cactaceae family of the Fomin Botanical Garden. The objects for our research were normal and fasciated stems of Mammillaria elongata A. P. de Candolle, Winterocereus aureispinus (Ritt.) Backbg., Austrocylindropuntia sobulata (münhlpfrdt.) Backbg, Cereus peruvianus (L.) Mill., Chamaecereus silvestrii (Spreg.) Br. Et R. species. Our study aimed to compare water content in tissues and protein concentration of normal and fasciated stems of cacti. Correlation analysis of the protein concentration and the total water content in fasciated and normal growth forms of the Cactacea family has been performed. The water content was expressed in percentage of the wet weight. The total protein concentration was identified in the normal and fasciated stems at 1 mg of the wet weight. A tendency towards an increase in the concentration of protein in W. aureispinus f. cristata, Ch. silvestrii f. cristata, A. sobulata f. cristata was revealed. In M. elongata f. cristata and C. peruvianus f. monstrosa this parameter tends to decrease in comparison to the lower concentration of protein in their normal forms. However, the significant difference of this parameter has not been found. The total protein concentration in fasciated forms of growth has been compared. Cristated and normal forms of W. aureispinus have lower concentration of protein than other species under analysis. The highest concentration of total protein among the normal stems of cacti in C. peruvianus has been registered, so differences in the total protein content among genera in same forms of growth were identified. The fasciated forms of W. aureispinus, C. peruvianus and Ch. silvestrii have higher total water content in the tissues than normal forms. Totally different results for the fasciated forms of M. elongata, A. cylindrica have been obtained. The study demonstrated a difference of the total water content of tissues of genera. All species and their forms have a high total water content of the stem tissue, 93.2 % in average, which proves a high drought resistance of given plants. The relation between the total water content of tissues and total protein concentration has been determined by the correlation analysis. A high value of a negative correlation for all the species and groups have been obtained. To sum up, the fasciated forms have no differences of the given parameters in comparison to the normal forms of plants.
