BEE SUBSPECIES NATIVE TO APIARIES OF TERNOPIL REGION
Bees are unique insects that have their own features: they can adapt to winter colds, build up strong families, serve as plant pollinators, utilize nectar, and make honey. Bee species native to Ukraine are characterized by specific morphological characteristics, physiological features and high performance levels. According to the zoning plan of Ukraine three species dominate the beekeeping: Ukrainian steppe, Carpathian and Polissia species respectively. The constant interaction of natural and geographical, socio-economic and economic factors led to significant changes in beekeeping activity. The typology of honeybee species native for some regional apiaries has been determined. The study of the given apiary sites showed that not all the features comply with the standard. The proboscis length of the bees native for apiary site № 1 ranged from 5.9 to 6.6 mm, while for apiary site №2 that figure was 6.0-6.6 mm. The research demonstrated that at both apiary sites 70% bees have standard features characteristic of the Carpathian species. Cubital index as a way to differentiate species and subspecies (a differentiating feature) is of high reliability in combination with discoidal shift angle, especially to distinguish between Carpathian, Middle- and Caucasian bee species. The cubital index value of honeybees from apiary site № 1 ranged 2.0-2.6 and apiary № 2 - 2.1-3.0. The data obtained at apiaries number 1 and number 2 show that 70 and 80% of bees have the features characteristic of the given species and results of discoidal shift angle prove that 70% of bees in apiary №1 and 90% of bees in apiary № 2 share the same distinguishing features. The results of the study indicate that distinct features characteristic of Carpathian and Ukrainian steppe subspecies were identified on the basis of morphological parameters demonstrate rather. Failure to hold a pure line of bees as a result of cross-breeding leads to fall in honey production.
