SCOTS PINE (PINUS SYLVESTRIS L.) REGENERATION IN IRON ORE TAILINGS OF KRYVYI RIH AREA

For over 30 years various conifers have been used for planting in the iron ore tailings in Kryvyi Rih area. One of the the most productive species is Scots pine (P. sylvestris); its plantings cover two mine dumps and are found growing by natural regeneration as a result of self-seeding. These volunteer plants produce seeds floating to the adjacent dumps. The process of a species regeneration outside its habitat is considered as its naturalization. Such species may produce introduction populations. This paper intends to examine self-seeding plantings of P. sylvestris in the iron ore tailings of Kryvyi Rih area within the framework of population biology and genetics. We have focused on the study of self-seeding individuals of P. sylvestris growing around 30-year-old plantings and covering the mine dump of Kryvyi Rih area as well another dump with self-set plants sown from seeds floated in from the adjacent conifer woodland. The isoenzymes of 8 enzyme systems have been used as genetic markers. The obtained results make it possible to argue that P. sylvestris has been regenerated annually for over 10 years. Out of a variety of self-seeding individuals the most widespread plants were 2–6-year-olds; their number in several habitats reached 5-27 individuals per 100 m2. In general, the area occupied by self-seeding individuals of P. sylvestris covering berm slopes and flats of the dump was 2 ha large; several 15–20-year-old trees were 12-15 m high with diameter of as much as 25 cm at the 130 cm level. The intensity of regeneration is conditioned by the climate and the weather, especially sufficient moisture quantity in dump rocks during the period of seed swelling and further juvenile development of seedlings. Young plants of P. sylvestris enter the reproductive phase at the age of 7 or 8. Older trees produce on the average 16.4 full value seeds per a cone. The study demonstrates that the genetic structure of self-seeding plants measured by 18 allozyme loci of 8 enzyme systems is close to equilibrium structure according to Hardy-Weinberg principle. Allele diversity of self-seeding individuals is not so wide and it equals 2.333 alleles per a locus whereas one of P. sylvestris natural populations is 2.944 alleles per a locus. However, the heterozygosity of self-seeding individuals and those of natural populations is similar: 0.231 and 0.227 respectively. The regeneration of P. sylvestris is fostered by the seeds produced by self-seeding individuals forming cones at the age of 7-8. Therefore, colonization of P. sylvestris in both mine dumps is to be considered as the formative process of local populations of this species in drastically changed technogenic territories outside its habitat. To form the small populations of P. sylvestris even a few maternal genotypes are enough.
